My Parents Are Dirty Hippies

I'm sure this shocks exactly no one. A lot of people, upon learning that I was dropping out of Central, immediately asked me whether my parents knew, cared, what they thought, etc. My parents were pretty much all for it. My mom read a few of the books I had checked out of the library at the time (John Taylor Gatto, that kind of thing), and I think by the end she would've been a little horrified if I hadn't dropped out of school.

So, they're pretty freaking liberal. So-- and I think this follows-- my mom wants to get chickens. To put in our garage.

This strikes me as moderately insane.

There are dead chickens at Super Target. There are live chickens on farms in places where your next neighbor lives several bajillion miles away and there is no WiFi. We do not live in one of those places, but we do live six minutes away from Super Target, Rainbow, and that one shady discount grocery store.

Real, living chickens would squawk and strut and probably shit everywhere. I find this worrisome. However, I feel like I probably owe my mom one in the keeping-an-open-mind department in terms of letting me drop out of school. So we'll see.

  1. Chickens are awesome! I wish I could get some!
As long as you don't get a rooster, they aren't too noisy. Fresh eggs are delicious, way better than anything you can get at Super Target, and six minutes closer.

I am in the opposite boat, trying to convince my parents that we should get a goat because my brother is too lazy to cut the grass. and because I've always wanted one... (so what if they are slightly illegal where we live?)

  2. Chickens are great!!! Wouldn't it be nice to like, wake up on a sunny morning, make your coffee, strut out to the garage in your bathrobe and get eggs for your breakfast... It's really not so bad. We have LOTS of chickens at my farm and they're pretty nice to have around, makes things a little more lively.

And they can make really good pets...

But, you know, they can be super obnoxious. I know someone (and probably a few more people) who cringe at the sound of a cluck or squawk..

  3. Chicken's are awesome. I really want a few, but have no yard. So that's not going to happen. I've meet some chickens too. They can be very nice and fluffy... but you might get a mean one. At least it will still be fluffy.
